Purpose
The Flocks of the Future national competition was developed to support and inspire the next generation of Irish sheep farmers. Through its involvement, Irish Country Meats aims to encourage young people to engage with the sector, develop new skills and contribute fresh ideas that will strengthen the long term sustainability and resilience of sheep farming.
Action
In Flocks of the Future, young farmers compete for the opportunity to begin building their own high quality breeding flock. Five winners each receive a mini flock made up of a five star ram and five breeding hoggets, a prize valued at more than €2,500.
Alongside this, participants receive tailored mentoring and technical guidance from Irish Country Meats, Teagasc, Bord Bia and Sheep Ireland. This support helps young farmers improve their breeding decisions, develop practical skills and gain confidence as they begin their farming careers.
Impact
Through its involvement in Flocks of the Future, Irish County Meats is helping to cultivate the next generation of leaders within the sheep sector. By providing high genetic merit animals and ongoing expert mentorship, the competition equips young farmers with the resources needed to build profitable, sustainable flocks for the future.
