Cow Eye Simulators

Purpose
Understanding how cattle perceive their surroundings is essential for improving animal handling and welfare. With our cow eye simulators, we allow operators to see the environment from the animal’s perspective, helping identify potential stressors and ensuring handling systems are designed around the needs of the livestock.

Action
Our cow eye simulator goggles enable the operator to visualise lairage and handling areas exactly as cattle would. The immersive view reveals what animals may find distracting, confusing or intimidating, from changes in lighting to reflections or structural features. By experiencing these environments through the animal’s viewpoint, staff gain deeper insight into how design and movement influence behaviour. The tool also plays a key role in training, helping handlers to recognize potentially challenging areas for cattle so they can adapt their techniques accordingly.

Impact
The simulator technology is helping ABP improve the design and operation of its facilities, creating calmer and more predictable environments for livestock. Staff are better able to anticipate how animals will respond during handling, which supports smoother movement, reduces stress and enhances welfare outcomes.
The insights strengthen both facility improvements and handler training, ensuring animal centred design remains at the core of ABP’s welfare standards.
