Clones Heat Pump

Purpose
Reducing carbon emissions is a key priority at ABP Clones. We identified much of the site’s energy demand came from heating water, and a significant amount of heat was lost through refrigeration units. The goal was to capture this wasted energy and turn it into a clean, efficient heat source.

Action
In partnership with energy provider ESB, we installed a state-of-the-art heat pump system. The system works by recovering lost refrigeration heat for cleaning, processing and hygiene, and boosting it to produce hot water at 45°C and 60°C.
For higher temperatures, liquified petroleum gas (LPG) boilers now provide efficient top-up heat at 90°C. This means only a small amount of additional energy is needed.
The setup mirrors how air-to-water heat pumps operate in homes, but instead of using air, it harnesses waste heat already generated on-site.

Impact
The heat pump system will reduce emissions by approximately 1,700 tonnes of CO₂ each year, equivalent to the annual energy use of more than 268 homes.
Thanks to the improvements, ABP Clones has been able to eliminate heavy fuel oil usage, lower Scope 1 emissions and move substantially closer to ABP’s target of reducing Scope 1 and 2 emissions by 42% between 2021 and 2030 across all sites in Ireland, the UK and our affiliates in Europe.”.
