Purpose
The ABP Angus Youth Challenge is designed to inspire students aged 14 to 15 in Northern Ireland to explore opportunities in the agri food sector. Its purpose is to introduce young people to sustainable beef production, animal welfare and the science based approaches shaping the future of the industry, while encouraging them to develop confidence, teamwork and leadership skills.
Action
Delivered in partnership with the Certified Irish Angus Producer Group, the Youth Challenge is an annual initiative to engage young people in the world of farming.
Students choose topics such as sustainable agriculture, consumer engagement or farm to fork traceability, and receive guidance from advisors at the College of Agriculture, Food and Rural Enterprise. The finalists, who are announced and awarded at events such as the Balmoral Show, are given Aberdeen Angus cross calves to rear as part of a year long research and development project.
As part of the programme, participants receive mentoring, study tour opportunities and farm visits that help with their practical understanding of the agri food sector.
Impact
Since 2018, the Angus Youth Challenge has helped educate and motivate the next generation of talent within the beef sector.
Participating students gain valuable skills in public speaking, research, social media communication and practical farming techniques. Meanwhile, winners gain hands on experience of rearing their own mini herd of Angus calves.
Ultimately, the programme builds awareness of sustainability and animal welfare among young people, supporting long term industry resilience and strengthening the future workforce of the agri food sector.
