Purpose
Healthy soils are essential for nutrient availability and agricultural productivity. However, 61% of soils across the EU are now in an unhealthy state. As part of our wider sustainability strategy, ABP is committed to improving soil health at farm level.
Action
We have used a combination of research, farmer engagement and practical on-farm support to boost soil health. On the research side, we have 10 years of ongoing work at our demonstration farm in Ireland, plus our partnership with Sysco at our Regen Farm, where 79% of soils on the farm are now at optimal status – well above the national average. Research partnerships like the UCD Long Term Grazing Platform have also helped to deepen our understanding of regenerative agriculture.
To engage farmers, we offer discounted soil sampling to our suppliers across all ABP Ireland sites. That work is supported by our farm liaison team, who help farmers understand and interpret their results to improve soil structure and fertility.
Impact
Our work is enabling farmers to restore soil function, enhance productivity, support carbon sequestration and reduce nutrient losses from farmed land. While farmers are gaining practical support that strengthens their long-term land management, insights from our research platforms continue to guide the evolution of regenerative practices.
By sharing these learnings through activities and our social channels, we are helping farmers adopt stronger, more resilient systems that contribute to healthier soils across the supply chain.
