Purpose
Tree planting plays a vital role in enhancing biodiversity, supporting local ecosystems and contributing to carbon reduction. Across our sites, we’ve strengthened environmental awareness within communities and encouraged the planting of native trees to deliver benefits for people and for nature.
Action
Across our UK & Ireland sites, ABP has been encouraging the planting of native trees, each of which have the potential to absorb up to 14 kilograms of carbon dioxide annually.
In Ireland, ABP Clones donated over 1,000 native Irish trees to 44 primary schools across Co. Monaghan. ABP Slaney sponsored the planting of 800 native Irish trees in partnership with local schools and supplier farmers, while our affiliate, ABP Tykocin, hosted a three-hour tree planting event during which 500 young oak trees were planted – absorbing approximately 3,000 kilograms of CO₂ emissions.
In England, our ABP Langport site has planted 10,000 trees in collaboration with the community. Our work has centred on one project to re-wild a community area. Sourcing trees from the Woodland Trust has enabled us to use mixes that deliver on goals such as minimising tree disease, providing plant for pollinators, and ensuring a year-round colour communities will enjoy for years to come.
Collaboration between ABP and local schools, farmers and communities has led to meaningful improvements in the sustainability of school grounds and surrounding areas, ensuring the impact extends across the wider farming community.
Impact
These tree planting programmes are helping the long term restoration of natural ecosystems while also contributing to carbon reduction. The initiative not only strengthens environmental awareness and supports biodiversity, but it also fosters collaboration between ABP sites and local communities.
