Purpose
Healthy rivers and catchments are vital for farming, biodiversity and rural communities. Across Ireland, some water bodies are under pressure from nutrient run-off and land use practices. ABP’s goal is to work in partnership with farmers and support them in improving water quality at source, strengthening local ecosystems and contributing to restoration efforts.
Action
ABP is actively involved in improving water quality in high-risk catchments across the country. Our teams work directly with farmers to reduce nutrient, pesticide and sediment losses, while also supporting practical improvements that help protect local waterways across the Boyne, Barrow, Slaney, Blackwater, Bandon, Nore and Suir catchments, our trained staff work one-to-one with farmers on water protection measures and have supported farmers with their Water EIP grant applications. Through the Water EIP Programme farmers can secure funding for fencing, water troughs and solar pumps for their farms.
Impact
The EPA has reported reductions in nitrogen levels in at-risk catchment areas, signalling encouraging progress in national water quality efforts. Through our involvement in catchment programmes, more farmers are now putting practical measures in place to protect local waterways. Over €250,000 in grant funding has been applied for through ABP supported applications, helping farms implement fencing, buffer zones and alternative water systems that reduce run off into nearby rivers.
