
Purpose
The Ellesmere beef processing facility has long been an important site within ABP’s UK network. However, by 2015, it required significant modernisation to meet rising expectations around energy efficiency, resource management, waste reduction and environmental compliance. We set out to make the site fit for the future.
Action
Our multi-stage programme of action involved demolishing outdated buildings, constructing new high‑efficiency processing areas and integrating advanced environmental technologies throughout the site.
As part of our commitment to recycling, the renovation was completed with 1,900 tonnes of stone, 1,500 bricks and 55 tonnes of steel from the old building. Meanwhile, the new facilities were designed with energy efficiency, water conservation and waste minimisation in mind. That meant incorporating high‑performance insulation, low‑energy refrigeration systems, heat‑recovery technology and advanced wastewater treatment.
The redevelopment improved efficiency while also prioritising long‑term sustainability. We installed renewable‑ready infrastructure to ensure future improvements – such as on-site renewables and advanced heat‑capture systems – could be introduced without further major structural work.
Crucially, the site was rebuilt with livestock wellbeing in mind. We improved light, ventilation and working environments, based on the principles of leading animal welfare expert Dr. Temple Grandin.
Impact
Operationally, Ellesmere now stands among the most efficient beef processing operations in the world. By replacing older, resource‑intensive systems with modern technology, Ellesmere has achieved a substantially lower baseline footprint. Electricity, fuel and water consumption have all been reduced.
What’s more, the site is well positioned to integrate renewable energy options, advanced energy‑monitoring systems and further circular economy partnerships as part of ABP’s 2030 targets under One With Nature.
