Purpose
The Certified Irish Angus Schools Competition was created to help Transition Year students learn about beef production and the Certified Irish Angus brand. Its purpose is to educate young people about the care, time and expertise required to produce high-quality beef. ABP supports this initiative to strengthen the connection between the next generation and Ireland’s farming sector.
Action
Students enter The Certified Irish Angus Schools Competition by submitting video applications in October. Shortlisted candidates are then invited for interviews in January to determine the finalist groups. The five selected teams are announced after the Croke Park Exhibition in March and later participate in the National Ploughing Championships, where each group receives five Angus calves to rear over an 18-month period.
Throughout their journey, students take part in study trips to leading agri-food organisations, gain first-hand experience finishing their cattle at ABP sites and prepare a detailed research project to present during the final stage of the competition. The experience is designed to immerse students in every aspect of beef production, from animal care to consumer understanding.
Impact
Our involvement in the competition aims to empower young people to develop confidence, leadership and practical farming skills while gaining a deeper understanding of sustainable beef production. Participants benefit from hands-on experience, industry mentorship and exposure to agricultural environments, all designed to encourage further study and careers in agriculture.
