Temple Grandin

Purpose
As an internationally recognised authority on animal welfare, Dr. Temple Grandin has transformed how livestock are handled across the world. Her core principle is that calm, well designed environments reduce stress, improve efficiency and support better quality meat production. We collaborated with Dr. Grandin to ensure ABP facilities reflect the very best global practice.

Action
ABP worked closely with Dr. Grandin to design and refine our lairage systems and animal handling processes. Her guidelines have influenced everything from the installation of curved walkways and natural light levels to the use of anti-slip flooring and quiet, controlled movement. These design principles are actively applied and continuously refined within ABP operations.
Our approach is grounded in the internationally recognised Five Freedoms, ensuring animals are protected from hunger, discomfort, pain, fear and distress, and are free to express natural behaviour through appropriate space, facilities and environmental conditions.

Impact
By embedding Dr. Grandin’s principles in our facilities, ABP creates a calmer and safer environment for animals. The thoughtful design of handling systems helps minimise distractions, prevent slips and reduce pressure on animals, contributing to a more humane process overall.
